Within a few days, more than 750 people signed up for the NYCEDC’s newest initiative: IN2NYC – a visa program for entrepreneurs. The NYCEDC tackled a big one and after three years they found a solution for a real issue for internationals. Starting in May, the unique program allows international entrepreneurs to apply for an H1B visa. Here is how it works. Essentially, the international entrepreneur becomes a member of one of seven New York Universities, which are all exempt from the H1B quota regulation. In other words, these universities can sponsor H1B visas without number restrictions. The requirements the international entrepreneur has to fulfill are relatively simple compared to other visa forms. The entrepreneur has to:

  • Become part of the school community, which can mean helping and teaching students to some degree
  • Locate the business or startup in the universities co-working space; a smart option anyway
  • An independent board of directors, which sounds probably more than it is. It means naming two people besides the founder to serve on the board of the startup – and help it grow.
  • Form US legal entity, also relatively easy

80 entrepreneurs will be able to build their businesses in New York City for three years with the option to extend that another three years. Plenty of time to build success. For more information see IN2.NYC
